Kiah River (Eden) PDF Print E-mail
Well, just got back from a great trip down the coast. Not one strictly for fishing, but I did manage to get a couple of mornings checking out a couple of new waterways. I love this sort of thing, never having fished an area, really heightens the anticipation and excitement. The Kiah River is located on the Far South Coast of NSW and empties into Twofold Bay, near Eden. Looking at the Kiah the night before on Google Earth really had me excited for what it had to offer. Deep holes and shallow flats on every turn, and being far enough out of the way to mean that it doesn't get pounded. In fact we were the only ones on the water apart from a couple kayaking a little later in the day.
I fished the Kiah, with my Brother In Law and 'guide' Gavin who made the day very easy by securing our ramp upstream at the Kiah River Cabins http://www.totaltravel.com.au/link.asp?fid=536508 What a great spot! Check out the link and you will see what I mean. Fantastic cabins set amongst native bushland, overlooking the Kiah River, what more could we want. Bookings for this venue are important as the owner reported that they were booked out until March.

The morning began with a smooth as silk launch at the ramp and then a quick trip to the "Jungle Hole", sounded great and filled with promise. After fishing for a short time we pulled in a small flathead but little else felt like hitting our lures. We moved on looking for some flats to fish and found a suitable area closer to the entrance, although we passed up many more options on the way, as in new water, its great to check out all it has to offer for future trips.
Kiah River Flathead
After casting for another half an hour or so and fighting the ever present Nor Easter I decided to share the Tango 70 secret with Gavin, as my main aim in most of my fishing trips is to prove the worth of our lures. Gavin tied on his newly acquired lure and was an instant convert. First cast and onto a fish, unfortunately dropped soon after, second cast, empty, third cast onto another good fish, time posing for the camera prior to release. Now obviously I was rapt in the success and still can't quite believe how it came off but it did. My own Tango in a chrome metallic not nearly as popular, although I too, dropped a fish a little later. The morning drew to a close casting to some very shallow water, that housed some very panicked baitfish, who were trying to hold their ground against a runout tide. Several Flathead were disturbed by us, as we drifted slowly over this patch. Baitfish following our lures as if, as if they were showing them the escape. Gavins drag screaming as yet another lost Flattie made his escape. All in all, fantastic water, great fun, a few fish and a wonderful location. Thanks Gavin!
