Nutter's Wrap March 08 PDF Print E-mail

Hi Guys

This months wrap is dated as its getting hard to keep up with whats gone on in a month.
1st March Back into the night shift Bass fishing.

nightime_drive.jpg

Fished the honey hole (Hiney hole Skinny) for 5 fish between 30cm and 40cm. lost a good fish trying to do the old bonito lift. You know rod down low and lift the fish clear in one go. 4 of the 5 fish had no top lips. These must be some of the escapees from a Dam upstream. The big plus was I found two lures that were lost a few trips back.

On the way home a quick stop off at a small hole on another system produced 2 fish 30cm and 42cm. This pool is only small and in the 10 casts I had there, 9 produced an aggressive surface strike right at my feet just as I was about to lift the lure out.

3rd March return trip to the honey hole with a new reel (Diawa red back) produce a 25cm fish on the first cast. 4 fish were caught with the biggest being 38cm. After catching the 50cm Bass on my home made lure I'm starting to fish with blinkers on. No other lure used. Again hit the small hole on the way home. After a small bat flying around my head a few times 2 fish were caught both around the 30cm mark.

8th March one small fish 33cm

9th March one small fish 35cm.

12th With tea at my sisters place and the boys getting looked after before hand. Fished a small system near by only produced one small fish for the afternoon.

14th put the yak in to do a re-con mission. After two months of night fishing the tackle box was looking a bit on the thin side. With the sun high in the sky a 1/8th Black and purple spinner bait was tied on. After 1hr of searching for lures none were found. One small fish was hooked and the smallest from the system. All hopes of recovering some lures dashed and just as my self confidence was low the spinner bait was belted just as it landed. This was one big fish, pulling line on a tight drag setting and pulling the Yak along as well. The fish was out in open water and all was looking good. Then all hell broke lose, the fish powered off dragging the yak with it. The fish reach the edge with me in tow. Than the stinger hook on the spinner bait came off. DAMN. Now the yak has a new enviro landing net.

15th 2.30 am the next day the yak was on the water looking for mister BIG. Only one fish but a good fish 40 odd cm. This is the first time I have fished out of a yak at night. It very different even the fog made it a bit more fun.

25th Time for a change of scenery. Gone back to a bit of LBG HSS (land base game, High speed spinning) Only one small rat kingfish

27th Back at the rocks again but this day really turned it on with heaps of Bonnies. Most were around the 1.5kg mark but some pushed the 3kg. the lure of the day was a Jindvin Jerk.

28th Back again on the rocks and the Bonnies just got BIGGER. This time armed with the new Diawa red back rod and reel the Bonnies were heaps of fun. 5kg braid and 10kg leader sore the red back flat lined a few times. The red backs performance was out of this world. This rod was way out of its comfort zone using 25gm raiders and than polling these fish out of the water and onto the rocks.

29th Change of location but still on the rocks. Not many Bonnies but Bluefin tuna were busting just out of casting range. This time we were putting live baits out as well as spinning. Just as the sun was staring to light the day three baits were sent out under floats. With in 10min all three baits were taking. Two missed hook ups and one connected. This Yellowtail King really put on a show. In the end a few more Bonnies and the Bluefin still to wide.

Kingfish not mine
