"Out on the cricket pitch good skippers take the lead. And on my boat I'm the skipper, so it's my responsibility to ensure that we're carrying the right safety gear.
So don't leave it to the last minute, make sure you upgrade to a 406 MHz distress beacon this year.
That's because from 1 February 2009, satellites will no longer process distress alerts from 121.5 MHz distress beacons. From this date, only 406 MHz distress beacons will be detected."

Keep your eye on the ball
"When you're out in the middle and the bounces are flying at you at 150km per hour, it's vital you stay focused. It's the same when you're out boating - making sure you keep your eye on the ball at all times.
Remember, your eyes are your most valuable piece of safety equipment. Out on the water, things can change in an instant - another boat can come out of nowhere or a wave can swamp you.
Suddenly, you can find yourself in real trouble. So if you're the skipper, keep your eye on the ball."

Analogue 121.5 MHz distress beacons (EPIRBs) will no longer be detected by satellite from 1 February 2009.
Switch to a digital 406 MHz distress beacon NOW!
ANZSBEG is encouraging the boating community to get in early and replace their 121.5 MHz distress beacons for the 406 MHz beacon prior to February 2009. To avoid high demand during the changeover period, boat owners are strongly encouraged to purchase a 406 MHz beacon now.
Remember to register your new 406 MHz beacon at the time of purchase. If you have any queries, contact the beacon hotline on freecall 1800 406 406 or visit www.amsa.gov.au/beacons.
